Chest freezers are sold by capacity — 5, 7, 10, 15, 22 cubic feet — but capacity is the number that won’t tell you whether it fits. The footprint that matters is width, and width is the one dimension that grows with the cubic feet. Height and depth barely move across the whole lineup. Here are the standard size classes, what each holds, and the clearance the spec sheet leaves out.

Standard chest freezer sizes

Almost every chest freezer falls into one of five capacity classes. The pattern is the useful part: as capacity climbs, the box gets wider — from about 22″ for a compact to over 60″ for a 22 cu ft chest — while height holds near 33–35″ and depth stays around 22–30″. So the question “will it fit?” is almost always a question about the wall it sits against.

Width grows, height and depth don’t

This is the single most useful thing to know before you shop. A 5 cu ft compact and a 22 cu ft monster are nearly the same height and depth — both sit about waist-high and reach about two feet front-to-back. What separates them is how far they run along the wall. Double the capacity and you roughly add a foot of width, not height.

That’s good news for tight rooms: a chest freezer almost never has a height or depth problem in a basement or garage. It has a width problem — the run of free wall it needs, plus the headroom for the lid. Measure the wall first.

How much food each size holds

The rough conversion is about 35 pounds of packed food per cubic foot. A 7 cu ft small chest swallows roughly a quarter-side of beef or a big-box bulk run; a 15 cu ft large handles a half-hog or a season’s harvest with room to spare. Capacity you don’t use still costs you in running cost and floor space, so size to how you actually buy — a chronically half-empty 22 cu ft chest is a worse value than a full 10.

The lid needs as much room above as the freezer is tall

A chest opens upward on a rear hinge, so it needs roughly its own height again in clear space overhead for the lid to swing fully open. A 34″-tall chest realistically wants headroom into the high 60s of inches. Slide one under a wall shelf, a workbench, or low basement joists and the lid jams half-open — a daily annoyance you can’t undo. Always measure floor-to-lowest-obstruction, not just the box height.

Go smaller (5–10 cu ft) if…

  • You’re overflow for a kitchen fridge-freezer, not a primary store
  • Wall space is limited — a compact needs only ~22–32″
  • You freeze a few bulk buys, not a whole animal or harvest
  • You want it to tuck into a closet, mudroom, or apartment corner

Go bigger (15–25 cu ft) if…

  • You buy half a hog, a side of beef, or a garden harvest
  • You have a basement or garage wall 4–6 ft long to give it
  • You shop in bulk and want months of margin
  • You value the longest cold-hold in a power outage — a full chest wins

Measuring your spot before you buy

Three numbers decide it, and none of them is on the box. First, the wall run: the width of free wall plus an inch or two on each side so the compressor can shed heat — a chest packed into a sealed alcove runs hot and short-lived. Second, the headroom for the lid, measured floor to the lowest thing overhead. Third, the path in: doorways, stair turns and hallway corners the box has to clear — an extra-large chest past 60″ wide will not make some basement stairwells. Add about an inch to the catalog depth for the rear bumper, and remember the lid adds nothing to depth but everything to the clearance you actually need.
