Freezers

Standalone freezers come in three shapes — upright, chest, and compact — and the right one depends on your floor space, how you store, and whether it’s going in a heated room or the garage. Here’s how they compare and the space each one needs.

Upright vs chest vs compact

Type Footprint Capacity
Upright Tall and narrow, fridge-like; shelves and door bins ~10–21 cu ft
Chest Low and wide; needs floor space + lid clearance above ~5–25 cu ft
Compact Under-counter or dorm; slots under a 36″ counter ~1–7 cu ft

Upright freezers fit narrow spaces and keep food at eye level; chest freezers hold more per dollar and stay cold longer in an outage, but they need floor space and overhead room to open the lid. Compact units slot under a counter.

Typical dimensions

Type Width Height Depth
Upright 24–33″ 60–72″ 28–31″
Chest 22–60″ 33–36″ 22–28″
Compact 18–24″ 19–34″ 20–26″

Putting a freezer in the garage

Most freezers carry a rated ambient range. In an unheated garage that swings below the minimum, a standard freezer’s thermostat can stop cycling and let the contents thaw — look for a “garage-ready” rating before you put one in an uninsulated space.

Measure the space, not just the box

  • Chest lids swing up. Add the open-lid height above the cabinet — a chest under a shelf can’t open.
  • Uprights need door-swing and a rear gap like a refrigerator — about an inch at the back for the coils.
  • Leave breathing room at the sides and top so the condenser can shed heat.

The how to measure method applies to freezers too — measure the lid swing on a chest and the door swing on an upright.

Frequently asked

How big is a standard chest freezer?
Small chest freezers start around 22″ wide; large ones reach 60″. Height is typically 33–36″ — but the lid needs clearance to swing up above that.
Can I keep a freezer in an unheated garage?
Only if it’s rated for it. Look for a “garage-ready” ambient rating; a standard freezer may stop cycling when the garage drops below its minimum temperature.
How much clearance does a freezer need?
Roughly an inch at the rear and sides for airflow, plus full lid-swing height for a chest or door-swing space for an upright.
