Standard vs Actual: How Accurate Are “Standard” Appliance Sizes?

“Standard” sizes — a 36-inch fridge, a 24-inch dishwasher, 27-inch laundry — are how appliances are sold and how cabinets are cut. But the round number is usually the opening you plan for, not the box itself. We measured the more than 6,000 models in our dimensions dataset to see how far the real width strays from the label. The pattern is consistent, and it changes how you should measure.

The headline: round numbers are openings, not appliances

Refrigerators and dishwashers come in a hair under their stated width. That isn’t sloppy manufacturing — it’s deliberate. The round number is the cabinet opening the unit is engineered to drop into, and the small gap that’s left is the clearance it needs to breathe and to clear adjacent cabinets. Laundry, as you’ll see, plays by a different rule.

Refrigerator width: the “36-inch” that’s really 35¾″

Measured from the refrigerators in our dataset, grouped by nominal width class. “Actual median” is the middle measured case width; “range” is the spread across that class.

The 36-inch class makes the point cleanest: the median is 35.8″, about a quarter-inch under the label, because 36″ is the opening the fridge is built to fill with a small air gap on the sides and top. The 30-inch class behaves the same way — a typical “30-inch” refrigerator actually measures about 29¾″. Plan your opening to the round number and the box fits with the clearance it needs; plan it to the box and it’ll be a knuckle-scraping squeeze.

Dishwashers: a 24″ opening, a ~23¾″ box

Same logic, tighter tolerance. Of the 24-inch-class dishwashers in our data, the median measured width is 23.8″ — the 24″ is the cabinet cutout, and the unit is built a fraction narrower so it slides in without binding. Laundry is the honest category

Washers and dryers buck the trend. Across the full-size models we track, the median width is exactly 27.0″ — a “27-inch” washer really is 27″, not 26¾″. Here the round number is the appliance, which is why laundry needs its clearance added outside the box: roughly an inch of side gap and several inches behind for hoses and venting. Don’t assume every category rounds the same way — the one that looks most forgiving is the one where the number is literal.

What this means for your measurements

  • Refrigerators & dishwashers: plan the opening to the nominal size (36″, 30″, 24″). The appliance runs slightly under that — the gap is the clearance, not a mistake.
  • Laundry: 27″ is the real width. Add your ~1″ side clearance and rear depth for connections on top of it.
  • Always confirm the exact model. The ranges above are real: the 36-inch class alone spans 34.9–36.3″ in our data, so a specific unit can sit anywhere in that band. Check it with the will-it-fit tool.
