Gas vs Electric Dryer: Hookups & Clearances

A gas and an electric dryer are the same size on the outside — the difference is what’s behind them. Pick the wrong one for your hookup and you need an electrician or a plumber before you can do a load. Here’s what each one needs.

Same dimensions, different connections

Both gas and electric dryers are about 27″ wide and 38–39″ tall, so they swap into the same space and stack with the same kits. The connection is the whole difference.

Venting clearance

Both vented dryers need room behind for the exhaust duct — budget about 4″ at the back so the duct doesn’t crush. That’s why the depth you plan for is several inches more than the dryer’s own depth. Switching fuel types isn’t a swap

You can’t put a gas dryer where only a 240V electric outlet exists, or an electric dryer where there’s only a gas line and a 120V plug. Changing from one to the other means new wiring or new gas plumbing — a real job, not an afternoon. Buy the type that matches the hookup you already have unless you’re prepared for that work.
