How to Measure a Laundry Closet
A laundry closet that actually fits a stacked full-size pair needs about 30″ of width, 40″ of depth, and 80″ of clear height — not the closet’s framed opening, but the usable space once the door, hoses, and dryer vent eat into it. The single most common mistake is measuring the hole and forgetting the 6″ behind the machines for connections, so always budget depth as machine body + clearance, never machine body alone.
Width: how many machines are you fitting?
Standard full-size washers and dryers are roughly 27″ wide. That number drives everything. A single unit, or a stacked pair, slots into a narrow closet. Two machines side by side need a genuinely wide opening — this is where most “it looked big enough” failures happen.

The side-by-side figure isn’t 27 + 27 = 54. You need two 27″ machines, a small gap between them so they don’t rub or transmit vibration, and a sliver of clearance on each outer side. In practice that lands at 54–57″ of clear interior width. Aim for the high end if you ever want to slide a machine out for service.
Height: the trap that kills stacked pairs
Height is the dimension people forget to check, because a side-by-side setup barely cares about it — and then they switch to a stack to save floor space and discover the closet is too short. A stacked washer/dryer or a one-piece laundry center stands 74–80″ tall.
Measure to the lowest obstruction
A low shelf, a soffit, or a wire rack mounted inside the closet sets your real ceiling, not the actual ceiling. Measure floor to that point. If you’re under ~78″ of clear height, a full-size stack won’t go in upright — look at a compact pair or a side-by-side instead.
Depth: machine body is not the answer
The machine body runs about 30–34″ deep. But the closet has to swallow more than the body. Behind every machine sits the water supply hoses, the drain hose, the power cord (or gas line), and — for the dryer — a vent duct with an elbow. Those connections push the unit forward by roughly 6″.

If your closet is only 32″ deep, a 33″ dryer simply will not let the door close, no matter what the spec sheet promised. Plan 36–40″ and you have room for the connections plus a hand to reach them.
The door: swing, clearance, and air
The door is half the battle, and it does two jobs at once. First, it has to physically clear the machine fronts — a bi-fold or pocket door is friendlier here than a swinging slab, because a hinged door needs its full arc of empty floor in front of the closet. Second, whatever door you choose, it cannot block the dryer door from opening. Front-load machines have deep, forward-swinging doors; if the closet door overlaps that arc, you can’t load laundry.

- Bi-fold panels don’t bow into the machine fronts
Air, especially for gas
- A louvered door or a vent gap is standard for any dryer — it dumps heat
- A gas dryer needs that combustion air; a sealed closet starves it
- Leave the vent run behind the machine unkinked — a crushed duct is a fire risk
The vent run lives in the depth you already budgeted. A rigid or semi-rigid elbow behind the dryer is far safer than crushed foil; that elbow is a big part of why the “+ 6″” matters.
What to measure, step by step
- Clear width — inside edge to inside edge of the framed opening, at the narrowest point.
- Clear height — floor to the ceiling, or to any shelf, soffit, or rack that hangs lower.
- Clear depth — back wall to the front of the opening, then confirm you have 36–40″ for a stack or dryer.
- Door type & swing — note whether it’s bi-fold, slab, or pocket, and trace the dryer-door arc.
- Hookups — find where water, drain, power (or gas), and the vent exit, and how far they stick out.
Write every number down with a tape measure, not your eye. Then subtract the obstructions before you compare against any model’s spec sheet.
