Washer & Dryer Dimensions & Stacking Guide
Laundry sizing comes down to two questions: how wide are the machines, and are you stacking them? Full-size front-loaders are about 27 inches wide; a stacked pair needs the closet height for both plus the kit. Here are the numbers — and the clearances people forget until the delivery truck is in the driveway.
Standard full-size washer & dryer
Most full-size washers and dryers share the same footprint so they line up side by side. The depth on the box is not the depth you need to plan for — hoses, the dryer vent, and the door all add to it.
| Dimension | Each unit |
|---|---|
| Width | 27″ (typical) |
| Height | 38–39″ |
| Depth | 30–34″ (add ~6″ for hoses & venting) |
Front- and top-loaders share this ~27″ width but split on height and how they open — see front-load vs top-load washer dimensions for the clearance that decides which fits your spot.
Compact (24-inch) laundry
Compact units are 24″ wide and shorter, built for apartments, closets, and under-counter installs. Many are ventless, which removes the vent-clearance problem but adds to dry times.
| Dimension | Each unit |
|---|---|
| Width | 24″ |
| Height | 33½–34″ |
| Depth | 24–31″ |
Stacking: only with the right kit
You can’t stack just any pair
Stacking kits are brand- and model-specific, and they generally only work with front-loaders — you can’t stack a top-load washer. The kit bolts the dryer to the washer and adds about an inch of height. Buy the kit that matches your exact models; a generic bracket isn’t safe under a spinning machine.
Clearances people forget
- ~1″ between side-by-side units for vibration and hookups.
- ~4″ behind the dryer for the vent duct, plus room for hoses and plugs — this is why the planning depth is ~6″ more than the box.
- Door swing. Front-load doors are large and most are hinged on one side; check which side opens and that it clears the wall or the other machine.
- The hookups themselves. A gas dryer needs a gas line and a 120V outlet; an electric dryer needs a 240V outlet. Switching fuel types isn’t a swap — it’s an electrical or gas job.
Measuring a laundry closet
- Width of the opening, minus ~1″ each side — for a stacked or single unit you want a little play.
- Depth: the machine depth plus ~6″ for connections, plus room for the door to open.
- The closet’s own doorway — can a 27″ machine actually pass through it? (See the doorway & delivery guide.)
- For a stacked pair, the height to any shelf above — measure the full ~74–80″ column.
