Two numbers decide it: the capacity your household actually uses, and the width your kitchen will give up. As a rule of thumb, plan for roughly 4–6 cu ft per adult — but the cabinet opening, not the cubic feet, is usually the real constraint. Here’s how to land on a size you won’t regret.

Capacity: how much fridge per person

Cubic feet are easy to over-buy. A couple rarely fills 22 cu ft; a family of five with a chest freezer in the garage can live happily in 25. Use this as a starting point, then adjust up if you bulk-shop or entertain, down if you shop little and often.

Width: match the cabinet opening, not the room

This is where most size decisions are actually made. Refrigerators come in a few standard nominal widths, and your alcove was almost certainly built for one of them. Measure the opening before you fall in love with a capacity number.
