French Door vs Side-by-Side: Dimensions & Clearance
French-door and side-by-side refrigerators are both wide — usually 33–36″ — but they behave very differently in a kitchen. One swings two narrow doors over a freezer drawer; the other swings two tall doors. Here’s how their dimensions and clearances compare so you pick the one your space can actually take.
The dimensions side by side
| French door | Side-by-side | |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 33–36″ | 32–36″ |
| Height | 68–70″ | 66–71″ |
| Depth (incl. doors) | 29–36″ | 29–35″ |
| Capacity | 22–28 cu ft | 22–28 cu ft |
On paper they overlap. The differences show up in how they open and how the space inside is divided.
Door swing and aisle space
A side-by-side splits the full height down the middle, so each door is tall but narrow — and a narrow door swings a shorter arc. That makes side-by-side the friendlier choice for a tight galley or an island close to the fridge. A French-door model has two half-width doors up top plus a freezer drawer that pulls straight out; the doors swing a bit wider, and you need room out front for the drawer’s travel. Either way, see door swing & hinge-side clearance before you commit to a spot.
Inside: wide shelves vs tall and narrow
This is the real decision. French door gives you wide fridge shelves — a sheet pan or a party platter lies flat. Side-by-side gives you tall, narrow compartments split between fridge and freezer, which is great if you freeze a lot but awkward for anything wide. Same cubic feet, very different usability.
Which fits your kitchen
French door if…
- You want wide shelves for platters and leftovers.
- The fridge section matters more than the freezer.
- You have room out front for the doors and drawer.
Side-by-side if…
- Your aisle is tight and a wide door would crowd it.
- You want easy, eye-level access to a big freezer.
- You don’t need to store wide items.
Both come in counter-depth and standard-depth versions — the counter-depth vs standard-depth trade applies to each.
