Refrigerator Door Swing & Hinge-Side Clearance
The door is the part of a refrigerator that needs the most room — and the part listings never measure. A door that can’t open past 90° means you can’t pull out the crisper drawers. Here’s how door swing and hinge side decide your layout.
Doors open toward the hinge side
A single-door fridge (top-freezer, bottom-freezer, many counter-depth models) swings its door toward whichever side the hinge is on. That’s the side that needs clearance — put a wall or a tall cabinet there and the door simply can’t open far enough to be useful.
How far the door actually projects
Swung to 90°, the door and its in-door bins reach forward by roughly the door’s own width — well past the cabinet face. And 90° is the minimum: to slide a shelf or crisper drawer out for cleaning, the door usually has to open closer to 120°. That’s why the depth that matters for an island or a galley is the depth with the door open, not the case depth (see how to measure).
Walls, corners, and the reversible-door fix
The hardest spot is a corner or a fridge tucked against a side wall on the hinge side. Two ways out: choose a model whose hinge is on the open side, or pick one with a reversible door — many single-door models let you move the hinge to the other side. Check that before you buy if your layout forces the issue.
