How Much Clearance Does a Refrigerator Need?

A refrigerator needs room to breathe and room to open. Get either wrong and you end up with a unit that runs hot, a door that won’t clear the shelves, or a cabinet that won’t close. Here are the clearance numbers manufacturers actually specify, and where each one applies.

The standard clearances at a glance

These are the airflow and door-swing minimums from the major manufacturers’ installation sheets. They’re consistent enough to plan around, but always confirm your exact model.

Why each gap matters

The sides and top are about airflow — the condenser sheds heat upward and outward, and a unit boxed in too tight runs warmer and works harder. The rear gap does double duty: it clears the condenser and leaves room for the water line on an ice-maker model, which is why an inch or two matters even when the fridge looks like it could sit flush. The hinge side is the big one: the door has to open past 90° for the shelves and drawers to slide out, and that needs a couple of inches on the side the door swings toward.

Don’t entomb it

A fridge squeezed into a tight alcove with no top or rear gap runs hot, and heat is what shortens a compressor’s life. If the space is enclosed, the airflow gaps stop being optional.

Built-in and counter-depth are a different rulebook

Freestanding fridges just need the clearances above. Built-in models drop into a cabinet cutout with their own specified allowances — see cabinet cutout sizes. Turning clearances into a minimum opening

To get the opening you actually need, add the clearances to the fridge’s own dimensions: roughly the width plus an inch, the height plus an inch, and the depth plus a couple of inches at the back.
