What Size Refrigerator Do I Need?
Two numbers decide it: the capacity your household actually uses, and the width your kitchen will give up. As a rule of thumb, plan for roughly 4–6 cu ft per adult — but the cabinet opening, not the cubic feet, is usually the real constraint. Here’s how to land on a size you won’t regret.
Capacity: how much fridge per person
Cubic feet are easy to over-buy. A couple rarely fills 22 cu ft; a family of five with a chest freezer in the garage can live happily in 25. Use this as a starting point, then adjust up if you bulk-shop or entertain, down if you shop little and often.
| Household | Sensible capacity |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people | 10–16 cu ft |
| 3–4 people | 16–22 cu ft |
| 5+ people | 22–28 cu ft |
Capacity tracks loosely with width and type, not depth — a counter-depth model holds a few cubic feet less than a standard-depth one of the same width, which is the trade you make for the flush look. We break that down in counter-depth vs standard-depth.
Width: match the cabinet opening, not the room
This is where most size decisions are actually made. Refrigerators come in a few standard nominal widths, and your alcove was almost certainly built for one of them. Measure the opening before you fall in love with a capacity number.
| Nominal width | Who it suits | Typical capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 30″ | Apartments, galley kitchens, top-freezer layouts | 18–21 cu ft |
| 33″ | Mid-size kitchens; French door or side-by-side | 22–24 cu ft |
| 36″ | The most common French-door size; full families | 22–28 cu ft |
Leave about ½″ of total side clearance so the doors can open and the unit can breathe. Browse measured models by fit class: counter-depth or standard-depth.
Work from the space, then the capacity
- Measure the opening width, height and depth — the full method is in how to measure for a new refrigerator.
- Pick the nominal width your opening allows (with clearance).
- Decide counter-depth or standard-depth based on whether the fridge is on display.
- Within that width and depth, choose the capacity that fits your household.
